Peep Pressure

27 Mar

March 26 – I resisted Peep-related peer pressure.

Very rarely do I hear anything good about Peeps. Almost everyone seems to have something against these marshmallow chickens.

When I was younger, I loved peeps. Marshmallows were one of my favorite things about Spring.

But, year after year of hearing horrible Peeps were, I too began to think Peeps were horrible. Sometimes, when a candy only comes around once a year, it’s difficult to remember if you like it.

Yesterday I resisted the peer pressure and tried Peeps for the first time in several years.

I love Peeps.

  3. The Hook March 27, 2012 at 12:16 pm #

I have an old friend who loves to place them in the microwave and watch them explode!
    I didn’t say he was a sane friend….

  4. krizzlefoshizzle March 27, 2012 at 12:23 pm #

that’s the same thing with me and candy corn. i only have it once a year so i never remember if i like or dislike it. all my friends dislike it. but PEEPS man! how can you hate them? they’re so CUTE!!

    • Katie Barton March 27, 2012 at 12:25 pm #

Candy corn is wonderful; I never have problems remembering that I love it.

      Thanks for stopping by.

Candy Corn with Peanuts…yum. They have candy corn in pastel colors now. I used to only eat it once a year…but now someone stop me.

  5. Bongo March 27, 2012 at 12:23 pm #

We made Peep S’mores the other day. Put the bottom graham cracker, chocolate, and Peep in the microwave until the Peep puffs up then put another graham cracker on top. Delicious!

    • Katie Barton March 27, 2012 at 12:29 pm #

      Peep S’mores. A wonderful idea!

Good for you! Don’t let your unique taste get lost in all the negative commentary. Have fun hangin’ with your Peeps! 😉

  7. Deborah Gibson March 27, 2012 at 12:26 pm #

    Hey Katie!

Your title intrigued me, as my mom is a PEEPAHOLIC! and caves to peep pressure every spring! I’m going to call her this afternoon and share your your so fun post…

  8. Peace Of Iran March 27, 2012 at 12:30 pm #

I do too! And I find myself in the same “to eat or not to eat” dilemma every Easter! This year I’m going for it though 🙂

  9. justalittlebrit March 27, 2012 at 12:34 pm #

I love this, I find myself doing this too! I hear so much bad hype and then give it a go and change my mind 🙂

Glad you resisted the Peep peer-pressure and rediscovered them! I personally have never liked them, but maybe I’ll try one again this year 🙂 Congrats on Freshly Pressed!

  12. Fruityla March 27, 2012 at 12:40 pm #

I only like them if they’re stale <_<

Yes. I said stale. Stale Peeps are delicious.

    • Spidr March 28, 2012 at 7:34 am #

Peeps honesty is a good thing.

    • Patsy March 28, 2012 at 1:42 pm #

OMG STALE PEEPS ARE DELICIOUS. I thought I was the only one! I will literally slit open the package with a knife and let them sit on the counter for a few days before I eat them!

  13. patricemj March 27, 2012 at 12:43 pm #

Peeps are awesome and even more awesome when stale.

  14. Mikalee Byerman March 27, 2012 at 12:51 pm #

    Peeps rock.

    ‘Nuff said.

Too bad we don’t have peeps in the UK.
Just have to make do with cream eggs.

    • Katie Barton March 27, 2012 at 1:32 pm #

This is the saddest thing I’ve heard in awhile.

  19. aso127 March 27, 2012 at 1:35 pm #

This is really a good work. I appreciate your efforts behind that. Have a great day!

  20. shanson3871 March 27, 2012 at 1:35 pm #

I use to LOVE peeps.. but I tried one a few years back and I hated it.. 😦 I was so sad that day, I felt like that little grip I still try to hold onto on my youth slipped away. My husband and daughter adore peeps.. damn them! 🙂 I’m glad you liked them.

  21. candy March 27, 2012 at 1:49 pm #

I love Peeps when they’re stale. We buy them when they first come out, open the package and let them ‘cure” until Easter.

    • Shannon Hadley March 27, 2012 at 11:43 pm #

YES! That is the only way I’ll eat them. They get a light chewy factor to them, rather than just fluff.

      • candy March 28, 2012 at 9:04 am #

Ahhh!! Another Stale Sister. My friends at work think I’m nuts!

      • Shannon Hadley March 28, 2012 at 10:25 pm #

My family thinks I am too. Easter morning I’d tear open the plastic wrapping and just patiently let the peeps sit till they weren’t squishy anymore.
Glad to have you, I’ll have to let them know I’m not alone 🙂

      • candy March 29, 2012 at 6:58 am #

        🙂

  22. aFrankAngle March 27, 2012 at 1:51 pm #

Gotta love the title as much as Peeps. After all, it’s the Peeps time of year.

  23. PCC Advantage March 27, 2012 at 1:53 pm #

I loved Peeps when I was a kid, but after eating about 72 of them one year and getting sick from them, I lost the taste for them.

Secretly, I’m jealous that you still get to love your Peeps. 😉

  24. ambermlee75 March 27, 2012 at 2:02 pm #

I like them when they’re a little stale and crunchy!

  25. Cerinthe March 27, 2012 at 2:09 pm #

Peeps aren’t bad but I love Cadbury creme and caramel filled chocolate eggs. It’s so sweet but the filling is soooo gooood.

  26. goingroundandround March 27, 2012 at 2:32 pm #

    I love Peeps too!

  27. dhall8221 March 27, 2012 at 2:49 pm #

The only thing better than peeps are *stale* peeps.

Seriously, pull the plastic off of those suckers and let ’em sit a week. There is nothing better!

Frozen peeps are a close second though.

    • christine March 27, 2012 at 7:02 pm #

Could not agree more! Love ’em fresh, stale, frozen, whatever. Peep rabbits, however, are a dumb imitation. Stick with the chicks!

  28. brains March 27, 2012 at 2:49 pm #

i used to love peeps when they were just yellow, and i was 8. now, if i tried to eat one with all that sugary goodness, my teeth would turn around and bite me for it.

  29. Briana March 27, 2012 at 2:56 pm #

Peeps are one of my favorites candies! But everyone else does seem to have an unnatural vendetta against them. No worries, though; more Peeps for me!

And sometimes people just don’t know you have to buy them when they’re soft and eat them quickly. Just poke the package to check! (Unless you’re among those who do like them hard obviously.) Microwaving can help if they’re just a little stale, but they’re better fresh.

This post totally made my day!

  30. Eagle-Eyed Editor March 27, 2012 at 3:03 pm #

Love this post! And have you heard of the Peeps contest that the Washington Post holds every year? You get to make mini dioramas with Peeps. Last year’s winner was the “Chilean CoPeepapo Mine Rescue”. I can’t wait to see what they come up with this year.

    • Katie Barton March 28, 2012 at 4:09 pm #

I had not heard of this contest, but thanks for sharing. I will certainly check it out.

      • Eagle-Eyed Editor March 28, 2012 at 6:00 pm #

The Washington Post will have the 2012 winners online. I think the winners are announced somewhere around Easter.

  33. Angela March 27, 2012 at 3:51 pm #

I just did a post on Peeps last week – I LOVE Peeps!!! What’s not to like about marshmallow covered in sugar?!

  34. Franz Patrick March 27, 2012 at 4:00 pm #

I don’t know what Peeps are (!!!) but this post makes me wanna try ’em.

  35. therealelise March 27, 2012 at 4:23 pm #

I love peeps too, and I’m glad they are not more loved. More for me. 🙂

  36. artistrybyadele March 27, 2012 at 4:31 pm #

    I love them too!

  37. My Camera, My Friend March 27, 2012 at 4:33 pm #

I used to love the pink bunnies, but my more recent memories involve my roommate and I taking a peep down to the microwave and seeing how big it would get. That was fun.

  38. Missey Twisted March 27, 2012 at 4:46 pm #

I liked Peeps as a little girl, but now they are gross. I also don’t like any marshmellow cereals either now. I will do a S’mores once in a while, I guess because of the chocolate.
I hear you can put two Peeps in a microwave, each with a toothpick stabbed through them. When one puffs up enough, it will shoot the toothpick out and poke the other one. Peep jousting, I guess.

  39. heart, hopes, and dreams March 27, 2012 at 5:10 pm #

I’ll admit it, I’m a peep lover myself. I’m okay if I don’t eat a single one…it’s when I have that first peep, fresh out of the package that I can’t help but want to eat more!! I’ve been resisting the urge to purchase some this year (so far:) because I know that I really don’t need the extra calories or sugar right now (hard to diet if you have peeps laying around….but I’m sure before next week is over, I’ll cave and have a couple of packages in my possession.

Glad you were able to rekindle your love for peeps again;)!!

  40. asolosingerinamerica March 27, 2012 at 5:16 pm #

Mmmm they are sooo good 🙂

    My favorite easter candy!

  41. beingjulz March 27, 2012 at 5:32 pm #

I’m so glad to hear that! I have NEVER had a peep but do love marshmellows and have been tempted to try them this year just to make my own judgement. Almost bought a pack yesterday but was like, what if they really are as bad as folks say… while at the same time thinking, they can’t be THAT bad as many of them as they sell… Gotta get a pack now so I can indeed try them. Thanks for the positive peep pressure. 😀

  42. fireandair March 27, 2012 at 5:59 pm #

    They make decent smores, too.

  43. Amy March 27, 2012 at 6:04 pm #

Hehe I nibbled down a set of them just a little while ago. And I had chocolate bunny and the typical chick peeps. I love Peeps! (The chocolate’s yummier though!)

  44. VivianaAyre March 27, 2012 at 6:05 pm #

I won’t lie, I liked them when I was little, but something about the sugar made me not enjoy them as I grew older. So I just toast regular marshmallows! 🙂

  45. christiangmill March 27, 2012 at 7:14 pm #

    Heh heh. Hilarious

  46. Karen March 27, 2012 at 7:35 pm #

I’ve never been a peep-lover but a local chocolate shop dips the (and twinkies which I also do not love) fully in chocolate. Pretty yummy. Just sayin’.

Short and sweet, but succinct post 🙂 I don’t have peeps in my country but how would anyone hate marshmallows in such adorable designs. Even seeing the packaging as photographed in your previous post makes one happy and tempted to buy 😀

  57. mrbricksworld March 27, 2012 at 11:26 pm #

Your blog has inspired me to reveal a deep dark secret.

Some people have their first strands of hair from their first hair cut, some business owners have their first dollar earned….I, on the other hand have my first Peep. It’s no longer soft, it’s no longer totally yellow and now…it’s no longer is a secret.

Hi, My Name is Mr. Bricks and I am a Peep-aholic.

  64. theyellowranger March 28, 2012 at 6:05 am #

Bleh, I hate peeps. I don’t understand the appeal at all. To me they don’t even taste like marshmallow so much as sugary air.

I’m glad you like them though. Everyone has different preferences and I don’t like when I get peer-pressured about certain foods or drinks.

    Happy peep-eating!

  65. mostlymusing March 28, 2012 at 6:36 am #

I love peeps, too! Every year, as soon as they are available, I buy 2 packages – orange and green if I can find them. I open the packages so air can get in and put them in my cupboard to get nice and stale!

    Chewy peeps are the BEST!

  66. Deana @bookananda March 28, 2012 at 6:58 am #

I have always loved Peeps. They have to be yellow, though. I’m afraid of the fluorescent pink and green ones.

  67. Kathryn March 28, 2012 at 7:28 am #

Stale Peeps…always! Not only to they taste better, but they look better when you toss them in the microwave for a little jousting 🙂

  68. Moonmooring March 28, 2012 at 7:39 am #

I too am a Peepaholic and LOVE this post. I have been thinking of doing a Peeps post myself. You may have inspired me.

  69. loseitbig March 28, 2012 at 7:41 am #

This could easily turn into one of those “Things we used to eat” topics. How about fluffernutter sandwiches? Marshmallow fluff and peanut butter sandwich.

For me, it’s all about the Cadbury Mini Eggs. They are what says Easter to me, especially now that I’m expecting. And the dark chocolate ones…….. ohhhhh my.

  73. heathermcamp March 28, 2012 at 9:27 am #

I’m not a fan of Peeps – I love the Cadbury Cream Eggs myself, I always buy them in bulk & freeze them so we can have little treats throughout the year. 🙂

I love the way you turned your Peep Pressue into a whimsical inner struggle – that was nice.

Congrats on being Freshly Pressed for this.

(My candy-from-my-childhood story involves those circus peanut marshmallows. I loved those things when I was a kid. Years passed, and one day when my kids were toddlers I decided I wanted to try them again. I was so disappointed. They were terrible. The experience left me questioning whether or not my childhood memories are valid. I finally chose to believe the evil company that manufactures circus peanuts changed the recipe. Much better than invalidating all of my childhood memories.)

  74. Madeline Lund March 28, 2012 at 9:30 am #

When you find older peeps in May or June–put them on a stick and roast them over the grill–YUM!

  75. sandraconner March 28, 2012 at 9:34 am #

Well, I don’t know WHERE I have been, but I have not heard anything particular that puts down Peeps or indicates they are worse than any other treat. I hear all this stuff about sugar in general being “bad” for you. But nothing about Peeps per se. I’m so glad, because I eat them unchallenged every year. I also love the new ones in the bunny shapes, because they have chocolate. And come to think of it, most of our lives we’ve heard that chocolate was “bad” for us too. Now we have had three years of reports that say dark chocolate can lower blood pressure. And — the icing on the cake — I read a report a couple weeks ago that reviewed scientific medical test results concerning the intake of chocolate and it’s protective work on the circulatory system. The tests showed that people who eat more chocolate have a significantly lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. And I’m talking double-digit numbers in the percentages of lower risk. I figure by next year, we’ll hear that people who eat Peeps have a significant increase in their IQ. So, now I definitely have to try Peeps Smores and chocolate covered Peeps this spring. Can’t wait to get to the store!!!

  76. sandraconner March 28, 2012 at 9:35 am #

P.S. Congratulations on being “Freshly Pressed”!

  77. Vince Chough March 28, 2012 at 10:00 am #

I miss Peeps! No such thing exists here in Buenos Aires. They don’t even have marshmallows here… sigh… sometimes we come across peanut butter and Tabasco though!

  78. The Devil You Know March 28, 2012 at 10:15 am #

I don’t care what anyone says, Peeps are da bomb! Whatcha gotta do is, tear the plastic and then let them sit in the pantry for a couple days until they start to harden up a little bit and get nice and chewy. Mmmm, the true meaning of Easter personified in a marsh mellow chicken. If you ever see the chocolate bunny peeps, grab em! Sooo good…

  79. Nancy Loderick March 28, 2012 at 10:21 am #

I’m with you – I love Peeps! To heck with what anyone else says about them.

Since it’s so long between the lovely Easter chick peeps and Halloween Peeps, I have been know to stockpile Easter Peeps and ration them so they last until Halloween. Granted they are a bit stale come August, but it’s worth it 🙂

    Nancy

  80. Meghan March 28, 2012 at 10:30 am #

I’m not really a Peeps fan (I think maybe you have to be raised with them?) but I fully support your decision to go ahead and eat them even though people were hating on them.
I love chocolate Easter bunnies, and nobody is going to stop me from buying and consuming them as soon as I can. Great post!

  81. terriskitchenuk March 28, 2012 at 10:31 am #

Oh I miss Peeps! They don’t have them here in the UK 😦

How poetic. 🙂 Peeps are delicious, but in small quantities! Kinda like circus peanuts.

  86. Writer Fighter March 28, 2012 at 12:27 pm #

I used to love peeps, until my local shop stopped selling them because no one was buying them 😦 Apparently I’m no one! The little yellow marshmallow birds taste so good, especially at Easter but you just feel weird eating them at any other time of the year, or it that just me?

  87. Christina @ Salt Pepper Brilliant March 28, 2012 at 12:35 pm #

I think peeps are awesome! But I am usually satisfied with just one. Stop by and say hi 🙂

  88. Mad Queen Linda March 28, 2012 at 12:43 pm #

Who knew there were so many with Peep fetishes (or should that be a peepish?)? And who has seen the giant Peep-drop held at New Year’s in Bethlehem, PA? It’s on my list. . .congrats on fresh pressed.

  89. Kenneth320 March 28, 2012 at 1:02 pm #

Peeps are one of my least favorite seasonal treats. And it is also such a downgrade from the Valentine’s Day hearts, which are my absolute favorite (sometimes I wonder if the chalky treat is powdered with cocaine. As Yoda would say: Addictive, they are.) As people have mentioned, their is the option of microwaving them, but it still does not make the peep worth purchasing. Perhaps I will roast it on in open fire. I mean, that is what I do with other marshmallows.

  90. Strange Trip Studios March 28, 2012 at 1:40 pm #

mmmmm….Peeps….I am like the Peeps pusher here at work. I try to get them all hooked. Peep pressure in reverse. Mwahahaha

  91. catherinecaressa March 28, 2012 at 2:11 pm #

My aunt loves peeps. Like the first person said, MICROWAVE! They become giant peeps and taste much better

  92. theplaceswevebeen March 28, 2012 at 5:35 pm #

I recently gave in too and had some pink peeps. I realized they are basically sugar-coated marshmallow shaped birds. Good though!

My sister loves Peeps too, but she has this thing about wanting to eat only the yellow ones. I guess it’s a throwback from when we were kids. We’re both old enough that there were never any Peeps in other colors. Yellow was it. Now, I guess she just feel that unless it’s yellow, it’s just not the “real” thing.

Im sad I haven’t got to experience this peer pressure. Living in Ireland, we don’t get Peeps. I shall have to try them the next time I’m over BUT i do agree,I always remember I love candy corn 🙂 we don’t get that either,so it’s a rare treat!

Peeps Are Awesome!! But have never tried the microwave. I see a trip to the store to buy some and try it out.

Never seen or heard of peeps before, but they look cute, and like the good kind of bad candy 🙂

Peeps man. Peeps. Let me tell you something about peeps. I was once addicted to them, the little yellow poofs of seduction. No surprise was it to find box upon box of the confection in my closet, under my bed, in my hamper or possibly on my person at any given time of the day. My addiction, my NEED grew to be so powerful that I was selling my body for a peep — “a peep for a Peep” I would say, and all of the local perverts would get a look just as long as I had that marshmallow in my mouth by the end of it.

Now I’m better. Now I’m able to control the urges — with the assistance of a few medications and in-home care. Don’t let it happen to you. They’re cute, sure. They’re sweet, definitely. But no where on the package is there a warning. If there was, it would read, “May cause loss of self control.”

    Peeps, man.

Every Easter- I get excited when I spot my first Peep on the shelf at my local grocery store. It’s like an old friend come to visit over the holidays. Seeing them makes me feel – nostalgic and who doesn’t love that feeling of family, chocolate smiles plastic grass and tummy aches – ahh Easter Peeps.

The chocolate covered Peeps are REALLY good! Better put those on the “try” list for tomorrow! 😉

Glad you gave the Peeps another shot. They’re not bad, unless you eat a bunch of them! Not a good feeling.
